Peoria taco lovers will have a new spot to grab their favorite grub next month with the opening of Brushfire Tacos y Tapas. They’ll also have a chance to give back to the community, just by dining out.

That’s because Brushfire, the brainchild of Clint Berkey, a financial investor who spent time as a missionary, is set up to donate more than half its profits to philanthropic causes and nonprofit groups.

“This is a vehicle to give back,” Berkey said, adding he is taking no cut from Brushfire at all.

“At this point, it’s all about giving back,” he said. “I’ve got enough to live on.”

The plan is to take 51 percent of Brushfire profits and reinvest it into the community.

The new drive-thru taco joint will open at 11 a.m. June 8 at 8395 W. Thunderbird Road. It will offer gourmet tacos and Spanish-inspired tapas, as well as a selection of five house-made salsas, churros and espresso flan.

Berkey said he has 13 employees at the Peoria restaurant. He hopes to open additional Brushfires in the Phoenix area, aiming for between two and three a year beginning next year.

“I want to be cautious and refine it,” he said. “I want to do it right.”

Because philanthropy is a key with Brushfire, the new restaurant will donate 100 percent of the opening day’s proceeds to Valley of the Sun YMCA.
